Different Types of Fireplace Dampers

Your fireplace damper is an important part of your fireplace that helps seal the inside of your home from the elements outside. When you are using the fireplace in your Indianapolis home, then you open the damper to allow proper draft and ventilation. On the other hand, when you are not using your fireplace, then you close the damper to seal off the opening.

To keep your home insulated and your fireplace working properly, then you need a working fireplace damper. What are the different types of fireplace dampers, and how do you know which one you need?

Read on to find out.

Throat Damper

A throat damper is installed near the bottom of the chimney flue. Throat dampers are metal flaps affixed to your chimney just above the firebox, and they are used most often in old construction. This damper closes off the chimney at the base, keeping the air out. You can also control how far open the damper is if it is a rotary one. However, these dampers tend to be more difficult and expensive to fix. Additionally, the throat damper is metal, which poses an issue for sealing because of the metal-to-metal contact with the inside of the chimney.

Top Mount Damper

Unlike the throat damper, top-mount dampers sit near the top of the chimney. You control them with a stainless steel cable that hangs down through the chimney. The dampers seal completely and provide a very tight seal. They are also easy to install and help you save energy. People commonly use these in new construction, and may even add one to their chimney even if they have a throat damper because of the additional energy efficiency they provide. The top-mount damper is a better, more affordable option for fireplace dampers, and they serve as both a throat damper and chimney cap!
